Michelle Waters - Loving Communion

Art Reception: Michelle Waters “Loving Communion” – 10/8, 6pm-8pm 

Join us for an Art Reception featuring the art of Michelle Waters with the collection “Loving Communion”. 

Michelle Waters is a self-taught artist from the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles California whose work is a loving communion with the natural world. Through magical surrealism, portraiture, still life, and altar making, Michelle conveys stories of gratitude and belonging, with a strong desire to center mother earth.

Growing up in a multicultural household informed Michelle’s identity making, holding appreciation for their ancestral ties to Savannah, Georgia and Hong Kong, their mother’s homeland. Michelle’s father taught them the importance of being grounded in spiritual practice, with this emerging as a protective life force in their artistic practice. In a similar sense, Michelle’s mother introduced them to cultural experiences rooted in tradition to help give their life a deep sense of connectivity. Themes of communion, home, jubilance, and healing are prominent in their work. 

“Loving Communion” is a collection meant to convey the expansiveness of rooted presence. To feel grounded, in harmony, and in togetherness. Through the use of clay earth tones, affectionate pops of color, natural motifs like: braiding, tiger cowrie, and watermelon, "Loving Communion" is my exploration in receiving and being present with familial support. My hope is that viewers experience warmth and comfort, feeling invited to breathe, and reflect on where loving communion is present in their lives.
