Beginning in 1913, every June (with a few exceptions), the Irvington Club hosted the Portland City Championships. In 1970, the city tournament was re-named the Rose Festival Tennis Tournament … that year, 350 entrants made it the largest Portland city tournament ever.  In 2005, adidas took over as the title sponsor. All prize money for the event is raised through donations by Irvington Club members and local businesses.  The tournament currently includes men’s and women’s open singles and doubles, open mixed doubles and men’s and women’s 35’s singles and doubles.

The newly remodeled Irvington Tennis Club, with 117 years of tennis history in Northeast Portland’s Irvington neighborhood, is proud to present the $13,000 adidas Open Championships 2017 June 21st – 25th. The tournament runs daily from 8:30 am to 10:00 pm.

The $13,000 adidas Open Championships draws over 100 players from the western US including rising collegiate players from prestigious universities such as University of Portland, University of Oregon, University of Washington, Stanford, Santa Clara and Gonzaga. In addition to these traveling players, the tournament draws 100 – 150 spectators per day!

Players like Roman Borvanov, Brian & Brett Joelson, Mike Tammen, Angelo Niculescu, Oren Motevassel, Travis Parrott (2009 US Open Mixed Doubles Champion) and Kyle McMorrow (Defending Champion), Kelsy McKenna, Suzanne Matzenauer, Khristina Blajkevitch, Bess Waldram and Samantha Hampton (Defending Champion) play in the adidas Open not only because of the prize money, but the rich tradition. “People like being part of the tradition here,” says Walter Seidel, Irvington Club Tennis Director. “They want to be part of history.”

Originally called the Portland City Championships, the tournament started at the Irvington Club in the early 1900s and continued until the 1970s. Throughout the early to mid 1900s, the tournament champions included Pacific Northwest Tennis Hall of Famers Emery Neal, Sam Lee, and Elwood Cooke. Reopened at another location in 1986, this historic tournament became known as the Rose Festival Open. In 2001, the tournament returned to its roots at the Irvington Club and later became the adidas Open.

The five-day tournament features more than great tennis. Opening night promises plenty of excitement. Sponsors will have an opportunity to team up with top-ranked players in a pro-am tournament. Sponsors also will receive complimentary food and beverages throughout the tournament and enjoy a specially prepared dinner on Saturday night.

As a participating sponsor you will have the opportunity to reach not only players from the Western US, but also hundreds of audience members from throughout the Portland Metropolitan area and beyond. All will be looking for restaurants and services near the Irvington Tennis Club. We ask you to consider this great opportunity.
